Innovative surgery: ethical and legal issues

Researcher: Denise Meyerson

This interdisciplinary project involves a team of philosophers, lawyers and surgeons from Macquarie University. Innovative surgery occupies a grey area between surgical variation and research on human subjects. It contributes to progress in medicine but it also raises significant ethical, legal and regulatory concerns.

The aims of this project are to define surgical innovation; to identify the challenges associated with it; and to provide concepts, guidelines and tools to help practitioners, managers and regulators address the challenges.
